Talk about a shower. Thursday night’s storm sent down rain by the bucketful, though it didn’t stop chic New Yorkers from making their rounds. Like those diligent postal carriers of yore — you know, neither snow, nor rain, nor gloom of night — they made their way to a belated baby shower for Princess Alexandra of Greece at Giorgio Armani’s penthouse pad.
But they didn’t bring any packages. In lieu of gifts, the Princess asked friends to make donations to Room to Grow, a charity that helps the city’s needy children, in honor of baby Darius, her second child.
“Two is definitely more work than one,” said Eliza Reed Bolen, who had given birth to her latest only eight days earlier. “We just moved into a new home and construction starts tomorrow. It’s chaos!”
Though Armani was stuck in Milan, Lillian Wang von Stauffenberg, Renee Rockefeller, Karen Groos, Prince Dimitri of Yugoslavia, Jennifer Creel (on her way to the Botanical Gardens’ Conservatory ball) and the Earl and Countess of Albemarle gathered for cocktails in his sleek apartment overlooking Central Park — three bedrooms, an enormous terrace and done up in beige, sage and sisal just like you knew it would be — with nary a pastel-wrapped package or bit of bright bunting in sight.
Yet other traditions of early motherhood remained unchanged.
“He’s just a warm little thing,” said Alexandra of her new baby, looking wistful. A moment later, she rushed toward the kitchen with a cell phone in her hand. “I’ll be right back,” she said. “I’m just going to call to make sure they’re in bed.””
