Washington went all out for the American Academy in Rome’s centenary celebration recently, with the White House, Library of Congress and National Gallery all getting in on the festivities for the group and its president, Adele Chatfield-Taylor.
It was hard to keep up with all the events — and Lily Auchincloss didn’t. When it was time for Carter Brown’s lecture at the Blair House, Auchincloss stayed tucked in at the Willard Hotel, reappearing later for Freddy and Diana Prince’s garden party.
Diana Prince attended to every detail of the party, held under a flowering crab apple tree surrounded by tulip beds. That included exercising her four-month-old Jack Russell earlier that morning so the puppy would be too tired to tackle the guests.
Mercedes Bass was honored for her largesse in helping with the $6 million renovation of the Academy’s garden in Rome. The garden will be renamed after her and husband Sid.
