Although it has not been officially confirmed, it is being said in the Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise camp that Katie would love to have Carolina Herrera design her wedding dress when she prances down the aisle with Tom later this year. It is also being bruited abroad that T and K invited Penelope Cruz and her parents to the wedding when they all had dinner together in Madrid last week, sin Penelope, who was off shooting. And while the mad rumors fly, how about this bit? Tom wants to invite Nicole Kidman and their two adopted children to the ceremony. I especially love that one.
As for Katie, she and Prince William‘s adorable, exuberant girlfriend, Kate Middleton, could have been separated at birth. The resemblance is fascinating — the same dark, free-falling hair, the same-shaped pretty face, little nose, big smile, the profile and especially that same sort of wholesome outgoing sexiness. Oh dear, have blondes taken a backseat?
You may have heard that Yves Saint Laurent is selling his breathtaking 100-acre estate, Chateau Gabriel, perched on the hills overlooking Deauville for maybe $25 million. The spectacular 10,000-square-foot main house was built in 1874 and has been the summer house of the designer and Pierre Berge for more than 25 years. Yves and Pierre no longer choose to summer in Deauville and so have decided it’s time to say bye-bye to all that. But not really, because Yves says he has high hopes that one of his friends will buy the estate so he can visit it again one day.
Chateau Gabriel, which overlooks the ocean, was abandoned after World War II until Yves and Berge bought it in 1978 and started its extensive restoration with the famed French interior designer Jacques Grange. The decor was inspired by Proust’s classic novel, “Remembrance of Things Past.” Each of the nine bedrooms is named after a Proust character and bears a plaque on the door with the character’s name. Yves’ bedroom is labeled Charles Wann, naturally. Also on the property is a stunning dacha that was dismantled, brought from the Soviet Union and painstakingly reassembled piece by piece in the woodlands of the estate’s elaborate parks. Read all about it in December’s House & Garden.

Sophia Loren — good for her — was made an honorary citizen by her hometown of Pozzuoli in Italy this week when she returned to her hometown for the first time in 22 years. She proudly wore a blue ribbon to symbolize her newly renewed citizenship in the small town she grew up in during WWII. And she trilled that, despite her glamorous Hollywood life, she has never forgotten “the sensations of the sea, the sun, the music and the sweet dialect.” How sweet.
Elton John hosted his annual “White Tie and Tiara Ball” last week at Woodside, his manor house in Windsor, which he shares with his charming partner, David Furnish. The theme of this year’s extravaganza was Africa and to prove it, there were real giraffes and zebras as well as faux “gorillas” mingling with the likes of Linda Evangelista in a hot pink strapless gown, Diana Ross in pink-slash-rose number by Bob Mackie, Sharon Stone in a black-and-white Roberto Cavalli with a Thirties feathered headdress, Kate Moss dressed in Dior and Victoria and David Beckham in heaven only knows what. But never mind the clothes; it was the antics of certain gentlemen and ladies who got the most attention.
Liz Hurley, spectacular in sequins and a diamond tiara, was with her boyfriend, Arun Nayar, and flush with the news of winning the part as host of the British reality show about the fashion industry called “Project Catwalk.” And she must have been feeling particularly giddy because she began to flirt with her ex-boyfriend, Hugh Grant, who was, lord love a duck, there with his current girlfriend, Jemima Khan. Witnesses say the atmosphere — already tense — got positively combustible when Liz grabbed Hugh’s hand and started sucking his finger, which caused Jemima to literally storm off in a huff. Hugh raced after her, but she wouldn’t speak to him, at least not then. It was her mute way of telling him to get the hell lost.
Meanwhile, Furnish was quoted as saying that his and Elton’s wedding would be a very discreet affair, with equally discreet attire. “We won’t be inappropriately dressed on the big day, because fancy dressing at a wedding just isn’t a very good look.” And, he adds, “Elton hasn’t given me an engagement ring, but I still wear a very special one he gave me 12 years ago.” I knew you’d want to know.
Isabella Rossellini, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Mary-Louise Parker and Alec Baldwin were among those expected to cheer on their pal, Campbell Scott, Tuesday night at the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s Young Friends evening, where Scott was honored as an outstanding actor and director. The evening featured the premiere of Scott’s film, “The Dying Gaul,” a romantic drama set in the intrigue-drenched world of contemporary Hollywood. Ooo-la-la! Also expected to be in the audience were the film’s director, Craig Lucas, and Patricia Clarkson, who plays Campbell’s wife in the movie. Scott and Clarkson were also together at the Grand Classics Film Series screening of “A Place in the Sun” last week. The fun night was cosponsored by Hugo Boss and The Week magazine.
Charlize Theron and her boyfriend of four years, Stuart Townsend, are rumored to be very over and very out. Charlize has been spending a lot of off-screen time with Woody Harrelson, her co-star in the yet-to-be-titled film they’re working on together. Further complicating the matter are reports that Charlize has been dancing the night away, the cute thing, with Michael Vartan, who used to spend a lot of off-screen time with his “Alias” co-star, Jennifer Garner, who is now spending all her off-screen time with Ben Affleck, as if you didn’t know. Oh, keeping up with these artistes is such a joy.
