It was swinging London all over again in the garden of the Victoria and Albert museum, where friends and admirers of the late Ossie Clark gathered to celebrate the opening of the designer’s mini-retrospective, featuring 60 garments along with sketchbooks and photographs from 1965-74, Clark’s golden years.
Guests, including Kate Moss, Bay Garnett, Bella Freud, Eloise Anson, Daisy and Poppy de Villeneuve, David Hockney, Marianne Faithfull, Zandra Rhodes, Manolo Blahnik, Suzanne Clements and Inacio Ribeiro, Matthew Williamson and Jasper Conran drank champagne, grooved to Jimi Hendrix and paid homage to Clark.
“The man was a genius,” said Garnett.
Maybe, but he wasn’t an easygoing type. “The seamstresses didn’t like him because his designs were so difficult,” said the designer’s sister, Kay Clark. “But everyone came to the store. People like Goldie Hawn and Bianca Jagger — always with her nose in the air!”
