Tina Knowles doesn’t know when to say when.
Between making custom “bootylicious” clothes for her daughters, Beyoncé and Solange; Beyoncé’s fellow Destiny’s Child members, and now, diva extraordinaire Liza Minnelli, one would think she’d beg off penning a book. But ever the multitasker (she also runs a hair salon in Houston and is developing a jeans line with Beyoncé tentatively called B Wear), Knowles hits the road this month to hawk “Destiny’s Style, Bootylicious Fashion, Beauty and Lifestyle Secrets from Destiny’s Child” (Regan Books, $23.95). It’s due in stores Oct. 22.
Speaking from her cell phone as she scours Manhattan’s fabric district for leather and suede to stitch up a pair of cargo pants for Beyoncé’s latest video “Bonnie and Clyde” with Jay-Z, Knowles says, “I’ve gotten so many requests from girls asking how to get Destiny’s Child’s look that it inspired me.” But the hardcover color tome, filled with family pictures and backstage shots, goes beyond how to customize a tank top and braid hair.
“It’s a lifestyle book. [Editor Judith] Regan has seen the ‘MTV Cribs’ episode about my house — which I had only been in about six weeks and decorated in two. I made an Indian-themed bedroom for Beyoncé and a pot of gumbo for the crew. And she went, ‘You can do everything! You’ve got to write about it.’ But it’s really stuff I do all the time.”
Knowles stresses that the book isn’t about breeding Beyoncé look-alikes.
“It’s about not following the pack. With a little simple sewing and painting, you can take clothes from the Gap and do your own thing. Be creative!” Without skipping a beat, she adds: “Right now, I’m headed to Liza’s house so I can measure her for her new VH-1 reality show. We met last night and we both love red. I’m seeing her in some beaded pants and a chiffon top for one of those dinner parties.”
