NEW YORK — If you thought there were lots of hangers-on at the Marc Jacobs show Monday night, it was nothing compared with the after party. A horde of hipsters and wannabes snaked halfway down the block at Cipriani 23rd Street as burly security guards yelled repeatedly to “just get in line.”
In front of them stood three young men with placards that said “Lil’ Kim, Shut Up, Bitch.” Were they voicing opposition to the hip-hop diva? Nope. “We’re not protesters,” one of them said. “We’re promoters. The album’s called ‘Shut Up, Bitch.'” Then he walked away, chanting the title over and over again, much to the chagrin of the waiting crowd.
Once inside, the scene resembled a teen genre flick, replete with uber-enthusiastic marching band members from the show still in uniform, a bevy of “in-crowd” types and hundreds of others just trying to fit in.
“We came up with the idea of the band this summer because Marc said he wanted to do something with the movie ‘Carrie.’ So we thought, let’s have a band,” said Robert Duffy as he milled through the throngs of barely legals.
And how did they select Penn State’s Nittany Lions? They first checked bands out online to critique the uniforms, whittled the candidates down to four and finally chose a well-known band that could learn a Nirvana song — “Smells Like Teen Spirit” — really fast.
Young celebs like Lindsay Lohan, Kirsten Dunst, Sofia Coppola and Jared Leto held court in the VIP room, tucked away safely from the riffraff. As usual, Stephen Dorff seemed to be flirting with every model in sight.
Selma Blair and Carolyn Murphy, meanwhile, democratically hobnobbed with the lower classmen. “There’s a lot of people,” Blair exclaimed. “I came in through the back door. Guess that’s the advantage of wearing a dress.”
The party reached its fever pitch when Lil’ Kim came onstage to rap for the crowd one final time before she goes to jail on Monday.
“This s— is bananas,” yelled the DJ and, indeed, it was.
