Following in the vein of Isaac Mizrahi’s documentary “Unzipped,” photographer and filmmaker Julia Bidermann has captured seven designers in the throes of the creative process in her photo documentary, “Pick-Up.” The tome, produced in a limited edition of 62, will be on display in an installation Thursday through Sunday at Sterilemind Gallery. The contents of “Pick-Up,” laid between two slabs of resin, include a Polaroid series of such designers as Proenza Schouler, Rachel Comey, Indigo People, Pierrot, Rogan and Valentine at work in their studios, as well as pages crafted by the designers from materials they use.
“There’s the leather page, the rusted metal page, the mirror page,” says Bidermann, who met with 80 designers before selecting seven to profile. “The book has a real storyboard feel to it.” For those interested in owning a copy of “Pick-Up” — at $800 a pop — don’t dawdle. Says its creator: “I’ve got 11 left.”
