The Komar Co. has signed a licensing deal with Liz Claiborne Inc. subsidiary West Coast Contempo to produce a line of young contemporary daywear, sleepwear, underwear and bras by Kensie.
The collection will launch for spring 2011 at better department and specialty stores in the U.S., and distribution will be expanded internationally, said Charles Komar, chairman and chief executive officer of the Komar Co.
“We’ve been wanting to do a contemporary line for years,” Komar said. “We felt there was a need for a young contemporary daywear and sleepwear brand aimed at twentysomethings, and our contemporary department is working on it with some very interesting concepts.”
Although first-year wholesale sales projection was not available, combined lines could generate sales of $10 million the first full year and build to more than $20 million in the second year, according to industry estimates. Bras will retail from $32 to $46; daywear will be $28 to $68; undies will sell three pairs for $24, and sleepwear and pajamas will be tagged $28 to $38 and $48 to $68, respectively, said Greg Holland, president of Komar’s contemporary brands unit.
The Vancouver-based Kensie and Kensiegirl and Mac & Jac brands were introduced by Eric and Lani Karls in 1994. Claiborne purchased the labels in 2006.
“The collaboration between Kensie and Komar has resulted in a women’s lounge and intimates line that is completely complementary to our Kensie apparel collection, with pieces that are playful yet comfortable, feminine and pretty,” said Eric Karls, president and ceo of Kensie.
