Top Secret Society, a Miami maker of contemporary bras that are meant to be worn as layering pieces, is expanding into loungewear and sweaters.

New items are tank versions of best-selling bras in all-over lace or Supplex with lace straps retailing for $70 and $88, and silk camis and tap pants for $84 and $80, respectively.

Distribution is scheduled for late fall. Ready-to-wear-inspired styles will include crewneck tops, ponchos and tanks in cotton, linen and viscose blends. Special effects will include faux leather back details. The items will retail for between $114 and $210.

Retail collaborations include Intermix, Bloomingdale’s, Cusp by Neiman Marcus, Scoop, and

Sisters and founders Andrea and Michelle Varat also teamed with the American Cancer Society to donate 100 percent of proceeds from pink and white special editions of their Prop Top sports bra and X-Factor sports bra with crisscross back straps.

The additional layering pieces are expected to double wholesale sales to $1 million in 2011, said Andrea Varat.

Since launching a line of sports bras in 2008, the collection has grown from seven to 19 basic items such as a racer-back style and silhouettes that are cut longer like bustiers. Gift-giving items for holiday include bras in antique-looking floral prints, velvet dot mesh, as well as crushed velvet bra-and-tap pants sets in steel gray, teal and mauve.

“Pieces are meant to be seen, to be layered under tanks and dresses with plunging arm holes and necklines like the Alexander Wang look,” said Andrea Varat.

Michelle Varat picked up the trend while traveling in South America, where a popular style is baggy white T-shirts layered over bright bandeau tops.

A select number of upscale styles are manufactured at their family’s former Tail activewear factory in Miami. Basics are produced in Colombia.

“Our next big focus is building international business,” said Andrea Varat.
