PARIS — Putting more “haute” into couture week, the Chambre Syndicale is underwriting a designer-studded black-tie party July 7 at the Grand Trianon in Versailles.
The event is to inaugurate an exhibition charting the influence of 18th-century France on contemporary fashions — and to revive a tradition of elegant couture closing parties that dates back to the Sixties and Seventies.
Chambre Syndicale president Didier Grumbach said the event is targeted primarily at clients; however, designers are also expected to be out in force with their muses and supporters, famous or otherwise.
A gourmet dinner for 600 will climax with fireworks, recalling the dazzling affairs that in the past took place in such spectacular venues as the Château de Chantilly, Grumbach said. Save-the-date cards for the invitation-only event are being dispatched shortly.
The Grand Trianon, a palace made of stone and pink marble, was built by Louis XIV as a retreat from the rigors of court life.
Curated by Olivier Saillard, director of the Musée Galliera, the exhibition will feature about 100 dresses from a long list of international designers and brands, including Chanel, Dior, Alexander McQueen, Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood, Yohji Yamamoto, Giorgio Armani, Ann Demeulemeester, Christian Lacroix, Martin Margiela and Walter Van Beirendonck.
Couture week is scheduled for July 4 to 7. The fashion exhibition runs through Sept. 9.
