MILAN — Bulgari has tapped Matthew Williamson to design a capsule collection of handbags that will bow for spring 2011 during Milan Fashion Week in September.

This is Bulgari’s first collaboration with a fashion designer. Francesco Trapani, chief executive officer of the Italian jeweler, said he selected Williamson “for the great sense of color and design he brings to his work, which resonates with our brand’s rich history.”

Bulgari’s accessories collections are designed by a team based in Florence, where they are also manufactured. Gianluca Lera, who helped spearhead the company’s push into accessories, exited the company last fall.

Williamson unveiled his first collection in London in 1997 and is known for his colorful designs, which landed him the job of creative director of the Emilio Pucci brand in 2005.The British designer left Pucci in September 2008 to focus on his own namesake collection.
