LOS ANGELES — The Kingpins Show, a boutique denim sourcing trade expo held in New York, Los Angeles and Hong Kong, has chosen The Netherlands to launch its first European edition in 2014 as a smaller, more exclusive rival to Première Vision’s denim fair.
Kingpins’ semiannual two-day show will premiere in Amsterdam on April 30, 2014, at Westergasfabriek Amsterdam with a target of 37 booths. The second event will be held later that year from Oct. 28 to 29. Emphasizing quality over quantity, Andrew Olah, Kingpins’ founder, said he has no plans to increase the size of the Amsterdam expo.
“Our plan is to have a limited number of exhibitors from each country,” he said. “Ideally, it’ll be two to three exhibitors from each country. We pick the best from each country.”
While declining to name the five exhibitors that have already committed to participate in the Amsterdam debut, Olah said the booths will represent textile mills, fiber companies, chemical companies and label companies from denim-producing countries such as Turkey, China, India, Pakistan, the U.S., Italy and Egypt. Unlike the New York and Los Angeles versions, which include garment contract factories among the exhibitors, the European edition will be limited to textile-related supplier companies. “We want it to be a fabric fiesta,” said Olah, who launched Kingpins in New York in 2004.
Kingpins’ Amsterdam show will be held a month before Denim by Première Vision is scheduled to open its doors in Paris. The expansion to Amsterdam follows the introductions of shows in Los Angeles and Hong Kong in 2006 and 2009, respectively. Invited attendees will encompass European retailers such as Inditex Group, which owns Zara, as well as Denham the Jeanmaker, G-Star Raw, Scotch & Soda, Tommy Hilfiger and other denim labels that operate headquarters in Amsterdam. Olah also plans to involve the Jean School at the Regional Community College of Amsterdam, which is said to be the world’s first academic program focused on denim.
“[Amsterdam’s] appearing to be the center of blue jeans in Europe,” he said.
“These collections continue to build on that vision, empowering differently abled adults to express themselves through fashion,” said @tommyhilfiger of his line of adaptive apparel, which launches today. The line consists of 37 men’s and 34 women’s styles based upon the pieces from the spring Tommy Hilfiger sportswear collection. #wwdnews
