MILAN — After 17 years, the licensing agreement between Aeffe SpA and Jean Paul Gaultier has come to an end. The announcement, made in a joint statement at the end of trading day on Monday, confirms an earlier WWD report that day. The two parties “have come to a mutual agreement not to renew the contract,” effective with the spring/summer 2013 collection, said the statement.
“Jean Paul Gaultier would like to thank Aeffe for the long and fruitful partnership,” while Aeffe expressed “satisfaction with these many years of collaboration,” wishing Gaultier “all the bestfor the future.”
The Italian clothing manufacturer controls the Alberta Ferretti, Moschino and Pollini brands and produces and distributes collections for Cacharel and Cédric Charlier. In September, Aeffe struck a deal with Emanuel Ungaro to produce and distribute its women’s top line clothing and accessories, tapping Fausto Puglisi as the brand’s new creative director.
Last year, Barcelona-based beauty and fashion firm Puig purchased the 45 percent of Gaultier held by Hermès International and roughly15 percent from the founding couturier.
According to market sources, apparel manufacturer Gibò will pick up the Gaultier license. A subsidiary of Japan’s Onward Kashiyama Co. Ltd., which acquired Jil Sander in 2008, Gibò manufacturers and distributes a variety of clothing and accessories collections for designers including Paul Smith and Michael Kors.
The company was the designer’s historical producer before Aeffe.
On Monday,Aeffe shares closed down 0.17 at 0.58 euros, or $0.75.
