NEW YORK — Mayor Michael Bloomberg proclaimed today Giorgio Armani Day. The honor comes for a reason: it recognizes Armani’s longtime relationship with New York City, including his contribution to the local economy and support for public schools here.
The city’s proclamation is also timed with “One Night Only,” the designer’s multifaceted megaevent at Hudson River Park’s SuperPier tonight. The evening will kick off with a display of his “Eccentrico” installation of unique clothes and accessories. Armani has shown this before, but the New York edition will be more extensive, including special new photography of some of the looks displayed imposingly on the walls of the exhibition space (“Eccentrico” will be open to the public Friday through Sunday).
Armani will follow tonight’s showcase with a show in a purpose-built runway venue, featuring a retrospective of more than 100 looks from his Giorgio Armani Privé collections since 2005, as well as his most recent fall haute couture lineup, which was called “Nude.” The show will feature some big model names including Lindsey Wixson, Liya Kebede, Christina Kruse and Frankie Rayder.
After the show, guests will be able to mingle in a clublike environment — a pop-up Privé club, so to speak — for food and tunes DJ’d by Mark Ronson. While the company has been tight-lipped about celebrities, a slew of notables loyal to the house and friends of the designer are expected.
It took 12 days to build the custom venue.
This is Armani’s first visit to New York since 2009, when he opened his Armani-Fifth Avenue concept store. To mark the occasion, Armani also created a “Nude” ready-to-wear collection influenced by the couture, which will be available exclusively at the designer’s Madison Avenue boutique as well as at Bergdorf Goodman. The specialty store marked its 35-year history with the designer with a client event hosted by Roberta Armani and Glenn Close on Wednesday afternoon.
The designer’s relaunched Web site, armani.com, features more details surrounding “One Night Only New York” via armani.com/live, with editorial content and updates on the event edited by Style.com’s Tim Blanks.
As for the city’s special honor, Armani, who has been in town since Sunday evening and will stay through Friday, said, “In such a special day for me, it is a great honor to receive this recognition, which reaffirms a strong personal and professional bond with New York, a city that has given me and continues giving me so much.”
