MILAN — Salvatore Ferragamo SpA on Monday became the latest fashion company to launch its own online store, while Giorgio Armani went one further and unveiled plans for mobile commerce.

Customers of Florence, Italy-based Ferragamo will be able to shop on its redesigned Web site in Italy and the U.K. immediately, and in the U.S. and other European markets in the next few months, Ferragamo said.

“The Internet has certainly revolutionized our shopping habits and now even luxury shoppers are looking for direct contact with companies,” Ferragamo chief executive officer Michele Norsa stated. “The search for information and the desire to shop should not be limited by time and place.”

He added the decision to directly manage “this new fundamental channel” was part of a long-term strategy and the objective was to make the online store “one of our top performers around the world by 2010.”

Ferragamo’s online presence also includes a new site for the company’s museum,, which features news on the group’s history and culture and projects sponsored by the museum, including a new contest for young shoe designers.

Armani’s new mobile platform for the Emporio Armani online store, which is powered by Internet retailer Yoox Group, will go live on Nov. 25 in all countries that currently have access to e-commerce on, and allow customers to shop for new collections from their phones anytime, anywhere, according to Armani.

“This project is the natural progression of the Emporio Armani online e-commerce store and is designed to mirror the overall experience a customer would receive in one of my freestanding stores,” Armani stated.
