MILAN — Philippe Starck is launching a fashion collection for the first time in a tie-up with cashmere company Ballantyne.

The S+ARCK with Ballantyne line will comprise 30 pieces for men and 30 pieces for women: multifunctional and versatile styles mainly in cashmere, which will be available at Ballantyne’s flagship boutiques and selected multibrand stores in October.
“The S+ARCK with Ballantyne collection is nothing else [other] than just what we really need anytime, anywhere, using the natural high technology of cashmere to explore the new territory of the timeless elegance of intelligence,” said Starck. “I decided to collaborate with Ballantyne because of their ancestral know-how, their strong expertise in cashmere and the Scottish roots of the company.”
Starck combined wet-out cashmere with technical fabrics and silk linings to add a lighter touch to some pieces. Practical pockets are camouflaged and fluorescent colored linings create a contrast in the knits.
Starck will also design a new concept for the windows and displays of the brand’s flagships and selected multibrand stores. Ballantyne’s new Notting Hill London store will exclusively carry the collection starting in October.
The designer will unveil the project with an event on June 16 in Florence, during international men’s wear exhibition Pitti Uomo.
In a separate development, Ballantyne said that, following the sudden death of Alfredo Canessa in March, his brother Giacomo Canessa was appointed chairman of the brand. The two brothers founded the Malo brand in 1972. Ballantyne’s chief executive officer Giuseppe Rossi said this “was the most logical choice,” given the “experience and wisdom” of Giacomo Canessa, who had through the years supervised the brand’s projects.
Rossi said the goal looking forward is to turn Ballantyne, which is controlled by Italian equity fund Charme, into a more fashion-driven brand.
