MILAN — The first Fendi boutique in Munich opens in 12 Maximilianstrasse this week, marked by Karl Lagerfeld’s photo exhibition “The Glory of Water,” and an exclusive Baguette designed by Japanese artist Hiroshi Senju.
“We were never present in Munich with a freestanding store, but the German market is reacting very well to our products,” said Fendi president and chief executive officer Pietro Beccari. “There is a strong affinity between Fendi’s value and Germany, and Germans really appreciate Italian creativity.”
Upcoming are openings in London in April in New Bond Street and, by the end of the year, a New York Maison, said Beccari.
Senju is known for his large-scale waterfall paintings, and his white canvas Baguette reflects his paintings through the use of black azurite, crystals and crystal powder to create the waterfall effect.
Located in a 19th-century building, the two-level Munich unit uses travertine, traditionally associated with classical monuments and architecture, combined with leather, bronze and stone. The Baguette Wall, a tribute to the iconic Fendi bag, is presented on a wall composed of about 30,000 bronze spikes, creating a striking visual effect.
Several rooms display photographs of Roman fountains taken by Lagerfeld for the project “The Glory of Water” to celebrate the city where Fendi is based. In addition to these images, sketches by Lagerfeld and fur workmanship tablets are exhibited throughout the venue.
“The Glory of Water” was first unveiled during the opening of the Fendi boutique in Paris last July. The exhibition at the Haus der Kunst museum from March 19 to 25 will include images of the fountains of Rome taken by Lagerfeld, the restoration of the film “Histoire d’Eau” produced by Fendi in 1977, an 18-minute short movie shot by Jacques de Bascher to present the first ready-to-wear collection by Lagerfeld for Fendi, and a photo book edited by Steidl.
