Friends of designer Tara Subkoff, who has been diagnosed with a benign brain tumor that must be removed, plan a benefit to help raise money for her care.
The event, set for 5 to 10 p.m. on July 15 at the Deitch Projects gallery, 76 Grand Street, in Manhattan, will include a silent art auction as well as 200 of Subkoff’s own one-of-a-kind Imitation of Christ pieces. Her friends are asking local artists to donate their works for the auction to the Art Production Fund at 299 West Houston Street in Manhattan.
Subkoff’s friends said if she does not undergo surgery, she would likely not live more than two years. Recuperation may take as long as a year.
Subkoff, 36, is best known as the founding designer of the Imitation of Christ brand, which she sold to Josh Sparks, then-founder and chief executive officer of New York-based Rockwood Management Group, early last year. Sparks, who is now ceo at Thom Browne, closed the brand in December because of the increased need for cash flow in the economic downturn.
Subkoff subsequently signed a deal with Bebe, for whom she created a one-season limited edition Tara Subkoff for Bebe line. That was the designer’s second collaboration. Four years ago, she designed a much-buzzed-about line of footwear for Easy Spirit. Subkoff also has appeared in small roles in movies such as “American Pie,” “As Good as It Gets” and “The Last Days of Disco.”
Etro’s show, titled “The Tree of Life,” was a celebration of the house’s 50th anniversary. “My father founded the company in 1968, which was the year of counterculture and psychedelia. It’s really a show that celebrates that and the paisley design of India and its origin,” said Veronica Etro. #wwdfashion #mfw #ss18 (📷: @delphineachard)
