Issey Miyake Names New Designer

Yoshiyuki Miyamae will take over the brand's women's collection; a design team will oversee the men's collection.

TOKYO — Issey Miyake said Wednesday that it has tapped Yoshiyuki Miyamae as its new women’s designer starting with the spring-summer 2012 season.

Miyamae succeeds Dai Fujiwara, who ended his five-year run at the label’s helm earlier this year. Miyamae has a long history at the company, first joining Miyake Design Studio in 2001. He has worked with Fujiwara on both the A-Poc Project as well as the house’s mainstay collection.

“As he now takes up the baton from Fujiwara, Miyamae will pursue the creation of clothing that meets the needs of the new era and the new generation, while all the time focusing on the further development of the brand,” said Issey Miyake president Masakatsu Nagatani.

The Japanese house also said it is changing the name of its men’s collection to Issey Miyake Men starting with the spring-summer season. A design team will oversee the creative direction of the label.
