LONDON — Chester Barrie, the Savile Row tailor, has been acquired by Prominent Europe, a division of the Japanese company Itochu.

Prominent Europe is the garment division of Itochu, the Japanese textiles and trading conglomerate. It purchased 100 percent of Chester Barrie and its trademarks from Specialty Retail Group, the British retailer. The company currently sells high-end rtw and made-to-measure clothing and has a very small wholesale business.

A spokesman for Prominent Europe declined to say how much the company paid for the tailor. He added, however, that the Chester Barrie store would remain on Savile Row, and the wholesale business would be more fully developed. He said a return to the U.S. market was also a strong possibility.
