MILAN — It’s back to the future at Malo.

Managing director Massimo Suppancig has tapped Saverio Palatella as creative director of the brand’s women’s and men’s collections. Palatella’s know-how and skills with knitwear caught the eye of the late Alfredo Canessa, who founded Malo — at the time called Malo Tricot — in 1972. Canessa selected Palatella to work on Malo’s women’s line in the Nineties. Canessa later produced the designer’s namesake brand and bought the Gentry Portofino brand designed by Palatella. Canessa sold Malo and Gentry Portofino to IT Holding in 1999.

IT Holding has been in government-backed bankruptcy protection since February. Italy’s minister of development, Claudio Scajola, is expected to make a decision about the future of Malo, the group’s other brands, Gianfranco Ferré and Extè, and its manufacturing arm Ittierre as part of IT Holding’s restructuring plan.

Suppancig, who is also managing director of Ittierre SpA, took on the same role at Malo in September.
