NEW YORK — Michael Kors is making a Madison Avenue move.

The designer is relocating his Collection flagship to 790 Madison Avenue at 67th Street next spring. The three-story, 5,500-square-foot store will offer an expanded offering of accessories in addition to Kors’ complete women’s ready-to-wear collection, as well as a VIP suite.

The interior will be created by Kors’ in-house store design team, and is expected to have a residential feel with exclusive fixtures and a mix of vintage furniture.

“The new, larger location on Madison Avenue will allow me to showcase a much more diverse range of products than my original location at 76th Street,” Kors said. “The collection, which has grown to include everything from swimwear to evening gowns, and all categories of accessories, will now have a proper home for my clients, all under one roof.”

With the move, Kors will shut his boutique at 974 Madison Avenue at 76th Street. The designer explained that the new, more central location will also help to better serve his international and out-of-town clientele.

The company has been growing its retail network in recent years, and Kors has Collection stores in Palm Beach, Beverly Hills and Chicago, and last year added units on London’s New Bond Street as well as Milan’s Via Sant’Andrea.

Kors has also aggressively expanded his lifestyle retail concept, which has a significant focus on accessories and offers a mix of pieces from the Collection, Kors Michael Kors and Michael Michael Kors lines. By the end of this year, the company expects to have 80 such lifestyle stores in North America.

“Retail is obviously an important component for our overall growth strategy, and we intend to increase the number of freestanding stores in key global markets over the next few years,” said John Idol, chief executive officer of Michael Kors Inc. “We have had great success with our Collection throughout our existing stores and wholesale accounts, thus the demand is there to open more Collection stores.”
