NEW YORK — Isaac Mizrahi is ready for his walk down the aisle — that is, The Aisle New York.
The designer has whipped up six wedding gowns for the Isaac Mizrahi for The Aisle New York collection, which will make its debut Tuesday on the members-only e-commerce site. True to his camera-ready self, Mizrahi turned on the charm during a recent photo shoot at the studios of NoHo Productions here. Willing as he was to display a Sylvia Weinstock-made mini wedding cake, “The Fashion Show” star had his limits. Asked to strike a pose, he joked, “That’s for young designers.”
Mizrahi is well beyond the highs and lows of young designership, but his inventiveness remains intact. Eight years after he introduced wedding gowns at Target, the designer has returned to the bridal business, although not at the same price points. Brides-to-be will have to pay $2,200 to $4,500 for one of the six dresses in his new collection, which will be housed in The Aisle’s first designer boutique, along with a few accessories.
Mizrahi, who has designed wedding gowns off and on throughout his career and continues to create made-to-measure ones under his own label, said of his online venture, “The way I am going about it is breaking down that kind of purity and the final use of a wedding dress. There was a time when you couldn’t get away with that kind of lack of irony,” he said. “For a woman, a wedding gown is the most important thing she’ll wear in her life and on that day she wants a dress of her own.”
For The Aisle, he is offering dresses in sizes 0 to 14, as well as customized ones that require shoppers to submit 10 different measurements. The latter will be delivered within two weeks. The capsule collection includes a one-shoulder white on white point d’esprit tulle dress, an ivory peplum gown with three different grosgrain belt options and a silk minidress with an oversized floral accent.
A lifelong film buff, the designer cited Claudette Colbert’s opening montage in “The Palm Beach Story,” and the wedding scene in “Funny Face” as two favorites. The latter stayed with him due to Audrey Hepburn’s midcalf dress and “I love the idea of running down the aisle with Fred Astaire,” he said.
As for his other ventures, the designer will find out in June or July whether his Bravo show will be renewed for another season. His own business, arts-related costuming, daily morning swims and after-hours cooking and baking will keep him plenty busy until then. His design outlook seems to be in synch with how he described his culinary specialties, “I am kind of good at everything.”
