MILAN — When it comes to Prada and retail space, the approach appears to be more, more, more.
After opening 34 stores in 2008 and with plans to continue at a similar pace over the next three years, a Prada spokeswoman confirmed Thursday the Italian luxury firm was set to unveil at least two boutiques this month — in Paris and Prague — and remodel and expand others.
A new 6,500-square-foot, two-level unit at Place Beauvau 92 in Paris will bow in mid-July, while the Prada store nearby on Rue Faubourg St. Honore is in the middle of being refurbished. Both will be dedicated to women’s ready-to-wear and accessories and, like all Prada stores, are being designed by architect Roberto Baciocchi.
The unit at Place Beauvau is in a space formerly occupied by the Ariane Dandois art gallery, and is steps away from the élysée Palace, residence of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who wore Prada for his inauguration in 2007.
Also opening this month is a new women’s-only 8,600-square-foot unit in Prague and a revamped 2,700-square-foot boutique in Italy’s tony coastal town Forte dei Marmi.
Prada said Thursday it has already expanded and reopened a 4,100-square-foot men’s and women’s store in Taipei’s premier shopping mall, the Breeze Center.
Prada aims to generate more than 70 percent of consolidated turnover from directly operated stores by 2011, from around 53 percent currently, a company spokesman said last month. At the close of 2008, Prada’s directly operated store network totaled 238 boutiques worldwide.
