PARIS — Chaumet is the latest jeweler in Paris to become the target of a holdup after two armed robbers raided its Place Vendôme store Saturday, escaping with gems estimated to be worth hundreds of thousands of euros.

The pair, wearing motorcycle helmets, gained access to the store via a service door, after stealing an employee’s handbag containing a security card, according to French police.

Once inside, they brandished guns and demanded employees empty safes. The duo then fled by car. No one was reported injured during the robbery.

Estimating the total value of the gems will take some time, pending the results of a full inventory, police said Monday. A spokeswoman for Chaumet declined to comment.

In recent years, France has witnessed a number of high-profile robberies in luxury jewelry stores. The last holdup in Place Vendôme happened in May, when Chopard was targeted by a lone robber, who pulled off a swift daylight heist stealing 6.5 million euros, or $9.2 million, worth of jewels.
