PARIS — Thieves made off with a bag containing jewelry worth 4.5 million euros, or $6.1 million, after carjacking a vehicle for hire carrying the daughter of the mayor of Kiev on a motorway on the outskirts of Paris, a Paris police spokesman said Tuesday.

The victim was Kristina Chernovetskaya, the daughter of former multimillionaire banker and politician Leonid Chernovetsky, according to media reports. Chernovetsky is the founder of Pravex Bank and a frequent magnet for controversy in his home country.

The police spokesman could not immediately confirm the name of the victim. Judicial police have opened an inquiry into the robbery, he added.

Paris has been the site of a number of dramatic jewel heists in the past year or so, with the boutiques of Harry Winston, Chaumet and Chopard struck by thieves.
