TOKYO — Ermenegildo Zegna has unveiled a rendering of its new Peter Marino-designed flagship, set to open here in March.

The flagship will be Zegna’s third “Global Store” following the units on Milan’s Via Montenapoleone and Fifth Avenue in New York, opened in October 2007 and last March, respectively.

While most luxury brands choose Ginza or the Omotesando-Aoyama neighborhood for their statement stores, Zegna has opted to open a five-floor, 9,000-square-foot unit in the bustling business district of Shinjuku, home to department stores Isetan, Takashimaya and a bevy of other retailers.

Zegna said the Italian company’s textile heritage inspired the store’s facade: a glass curtain wall overlaid with a woven structure of stainless steel rods.

“The support brackets used in this reflective woven structure are arranged to give the facade a dynamic look, as though the structure were in motion,” the company said. “At night, the structure is lit with the use of LED lighting, which, in combination with its own reflections, gives Zegna a new, energetic presence in the district.”

The textile theme continues inside with stucco accents inspired by Zegna’s Cashco fabric, a corduroy blend of cashmere and cotton. A golden yellow radica marble stripe running along the floors and walls references Zegna fabrics’ selvage — the signature line at the edge of bolts of fabric to guarantee authenticity.

“Ermenegildo Zegna is an historic brand, known for the unrivaled quality of its woven textiles. I used this imagery throughout the design,” Marino said. “The action of the weaving machines heavily influenced me in intertwining stainless steel threads throughout.”�
