NEW YORK — The staid Upper East Side shopping scene is getting a dose of downtown cool.

With the opening of Cantaloup, a new boutique at 1036 Lexington Avenue at East 74th Street, partner Heleyne Mishan was looking to unearth up-and-coming labels and edgy designers from all over the world to lend some diversity to uptown retailing.

The outcome is a jewel box-sized boutique of 800 square feet, painted in hues of pink and mauve. Among the lines carried are woven silk belts from Scanlan & Theodore, La Cosa tanks, Eberjey lingerie, lace and silk blouses from Miguelina, knit tube tops from Brazilian designer Costura, innovative, drapy dresses from Claude Sabbah and T-shirts by Minnow.

There are also hip denim lines like Joe’s, Blue Cult, G-Star and Sass & Bide. The boutique is awaiting shipments from au courant designers like Matthew Williamson, Frost French and Diego Binetti.

Retail prices range from $32 for T-shirts, $150 to $250 for blouses, $120 to $250 for jeans and $110 to $350 for pants.

“The whole idea was to bring downtown designers to an uptown setting,” said Mishan. “There is nothing really funky or different, and the women who live up here don’t always want to trek downtown to find new things.”

The store was designed by architecture firm O’Neil Langan and has epoxied cement floors, mid-century modern displays and vintage, rustic furnishings.

Real estate sources say the store should do about $1.25 million to be profitable. Mishan declined to project first-year sales. She and partner Ronnie Tamir plan four more stores in the New York area in the next two years, a showroom and a public relations firm for new designers.
