NEW YORK — A group of apparel industry executives are pressing the city to endorse a “Made in New York City” label and marketing campaign.
The effort would involve SA manufacturers, the Greater Blouse, Skirt and Undergarment Association contractor group, retailers and advertising agencies.
“This plan doesn’t require direct funding from the city and it creates jobs,” said Bud Konheim, president of Nicole Miller, who is spearheading the project. It entails a labeling program that would identify all clothing produced here. He said a “Made in New York City” label would have “a lot of selling cachet.”
Konheim, Fern Mallis, executive director of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, and Greater Blouse officials met with city administration staffers on Tuesday to discuss the idea as well as other promotional strategies. Konheim said the response was positive, and he added that he is hoping that Mayor Rudolph Giuliani will announce the campaign today during the ceremonies marking the launch of the Fashion Center Business Improvement District.
A spokesman for Giuliani said Wednesday the mayor would make “major comments” about the fashion industry at the event but would not give any details.
