There was hardly any question that the aliens would conquer the box office over the weekend. The real intergalactic struggle was between reigning champion "Men in Black" and newcomer "Contact."
While the sartorially savvy duo of Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith once again triumphed at the box office--with a take of $30.5 million--Jodie Foster and Matthew McConaughey held their own with a respectable $20.5 million take. Chalk it up to their shabby wardrobes--the "Contact" stars spend their first hour on screen in shorts, T-shirts and sandals. Maybe black is the new black.
Even Foster seemed to think so--she wore a little black dress to her movie's Hollywood premiere. But she said she felt half-dressed.
"I'm a little nervous because I've only seen the movie once," said Foster. "It's always weird to see it with a bunch of people. It's like being in your underwear."
That could be a little awkward when Sylvester Stallone and Jennifer Flavin, Nastassja Kinski, Ellen DeGeneres and Anne Heche and her co-stars McConaughey, Tom Skerritt and Rob Lowe are in the crowd.
