Floating on the Colorado Las Vegas might be a desert, but just 22 miles from the Strip, Black Canyon River Raft Tours in Boulder City, Colo., offers a refreshing getaway from the casinos and bright lights. At the base of Hoover Dam, which makes for a spectacular backdrop, the rafts begin a three-hour, 12-mile journey downriver to their Willow Beach destination. The rafts float by desert flowers and scenery, big horn sheep and kit foxes, and natural hot springs and geological formations. During the trip, which descends 2,000 feet in elevation, there is one official rapid that earns a rating of 1, the gentlest on the scale of rapids. Guides entertain and educate, and hand out prepared lunches and a souvenir cooler bag. The company uses rafts equipped with pontoons that glide across the water. Each raft holds up to 40 passengers and is certified by the U.S. Coast Guard, which also licenses the pilots. Prices for the float trips are $64.95 per person or $74.95 per person with transportation to Boulder City from any Las Vegas hotel. Children ages 5-12 are $35 and children four and under ride free.
