NEW YORK--"These clothes are about luxury, but luxury that's sexy and young," says Calvin Klein of his pre-fall collection. The look is based on a lean silhouette delivered with a casual attitude. "The wovens look like knitwear, and the knitwear is tailored," Klein says.
Unlike so many others, who are broadening shoulders, Calvin opts for a small shoulder with "minimal or no construction." He's showing it in coats, jackets and sweaters, usually over lean, boot-cut pants, and often mixing tone-on-tone textures.
As for color, the collection is worked in a warm palette strong on browns and camels, with bits of apricot and cinnamon. "There's an awful lot of color out there right now," Klein says. "I think that after all of this, for fall women are going to want something that says fall."
Klein led the way in developing pre-fall as a major season here, and his collection is extensive. "This isn't about early deliveries of old shapes in different fabrics," he says. "If you want to stimulate buying, you have to offer new, exciting fashion."
