NEW YORK--Accessories designer Judith Leiber is about to join the crowd of designer names making their way to Madison Ave.
Leiber will open her U.S. first retail shop at 987 Madison Ave. between 76th and 77th Streets, adjacent to the Carlyle Hotel. She currently operates two freestanding boutiques in Bangkok, Thailand.
"We looked for a long time, and the site is perfect for the Judith Leiber collection," said Kathy Nedorostek, chief operating officer of the Leiber firm. "It gives us an opportunity to merchandise the complete collection together."
The 430-square-foot space will showcase Leiber's full line of day and evening handbags, small leather goods, belts and fashion jewelry, and is slated to open next spring. Parish-Hadley Associates will create the interiors, echoing their work on Leiber's new fashion jewelry and belt showroom, which opened here last week.
As for more stores, Nedorostek said the company is looking more toward international business, rather than opening additional stores in the U.S.
"Based on our success in Bangkok, our five-year plan focuses on international locations including London, Singapore and Hong Kong." Nedorostek noted.
Judith Leiber was acquired in March 1993 by British watchmaker Time Products Inc.
