NEW YORK--Andrex Industries, one of the industry's premier knitters of novelty fabrics, said it will close its Naomi knitting facility at Zebulon, N.C., by the first of the year. Ellen Schifrin, vice president, said the circular knitter will move some of the plant's 160 knitting machines to the firm's Asheville, N.C., plant, its other facility. Over the past several years, said Schifrin, the firm has been restructuring, "hoping to continue it profitably, but business conditions haven't allowed us to do it that way." Schifrin said the "tremendous number of imports" contributed to the decision to close the plant. In addition to the Asheville plant, Andrex uses contract knitters throughout the South. Andrex specializes in double knits, single knits, crepes, jacquard knits and linens.
