ART AND CRAFT

When MCM founder and creative director Michael Cromer christened Very MC, his new yacht, last Saturday, Sag Harbor out in the Hamptons came to a virtual standstill.
Traffic outside the Amazon Club, where Cromer's 51-foot vessel is docked, inched by as people craned their necks, honked their horns and watched nearly 750 guests toddle into the party at the Amazon.
"It's exciting," said Cromer. "It is nice to have so many of our friends here to celebrate with us."
Proceeds from the evening and other related events will benefit the Bay Street Theatre. Before starting MCM, Cromer was an acclaimed German actor.
Among those mingling with the exclusive luggage and leather goods manufacturer were Cynthia Rowley, gearing up for her Monday-morning flight to Japan to open a new store; Chessy Rayner; Mercedes Ruehl--who performed the actual christening; "Melrose Place" and "Central Park West" producer Darren Star, and Dr. Ruth Westheimer, who signed more autographs and posed for more pictures than any other guest.
"Oh, this is great fun," she gushed. "The boat is beautiful and the people are wonderful."
