NEW YORK--Martino Midali, a Milanese designer, will open his first U.S. store at 1015 Madison Ave., between 77th and 78th Streets, on Wednesday.
The 700-square-foot store will house Midali's women's ready-to-wear collection and his line of basics.
The designer, who operates 11 stores in Italy, plans to open a second unit in SoHo in September. "I know New York. Madison Avenue and SoHo are two different areas and two different customers," said Midali, who was reached by telephone Friday at his home in Milan. "In SoHo, we are looking for a big space to show more jackets, pants and skirts. We will focus on one part of the collection on Madison Avenue. The styles will be more unique."
The women's collection features jackets and skirts, priced from about $540 to $600. The collection consists of simple silhouettes in linen and synthetic fibers, such as elongated man-tailored jackets, tight slipdresses and loose, short beaded dresses.
The basics line consists of knit shorts and cropped tops, elongated cardigan sweaters and drawstring pants.
Wunderkammer Studios of Milan designed the Madison Avenue store with iron and wood accents. The firm designed Midali's Italian boutiques.
