Leonardo DiCaprio, the star of "Basketball Diaries," arrived 20 minutes late to the film's L.A. premiere while a couple of hundred people, including the movie's supporting cast, waited for him in a jammed Westwood theater. Among the crowd were Jim Carroll, Anthony Kiedis, Margaret Cho, Julie Delpy, Shannon Doherty and her beau, director Rob Weiss.
Toni Collette, the star of "Muriel's Wedding," brought a Charlie's Angels lunch box to the event. She didn't disclose what was in it, but did say, "It's not my lunch."
"Basketball Diaries," which premiered earlier in the week in New York, is an anti-drug movie about some promising young students who become addicts.
One of the more memorable scenes is when DiCaprio and some of his co-stars appear to jump into the Hudson River from a high, rocky cliff. Co-star Patrick McGaw said the actors were forced to cede the experience to doubles.
"They wouldn't let us swim in the Hudson River without getting hepatitis shots," he said.
