Designs by Donna Karan and Oscar de la Renta won't be represented only on the New York runways this fall. On Sunday, de la Renta's jewel-toned floor-length gowns will debut on Broadway in a new musical entitled "Swinging on a Star," written and directed by Michael Leeds, and featuring the music of Johnny Burke. "We actually worked with existing styles in my collection, but we made them more dramatic, and changed some of the colors," explained de la Renta, who's done costumes for ballets before, but never for musical theater.
On Nov. 9, minimal, sheer costumes designed by Karan will bow at City Center, in the New York premiere of Robert Wilson's "Snow on the Mesa," performed by the Martha Graham Dance Company. Karan, who designed for a Graham ballet once before, described the costumes as abstract and illusionary, saying, "They're not really thematic; they're designed to accent the movements and the spirituality of the piece."
