There was a fashion convergence Tuesday night at the Tribeca Film Center in New York when Byron Lars, Victor Alfaro, Christian Francis Roth, Vera Wang, Robert Danes, Yeohlee, Nicole Miller and others turned out for the premiere of "A la Mode."
The French film is a charming story of a young man who, by happenstance, becomes a tailor's apprentice and goes on to the world of high fashion.
"It was almost like the film was about Christian," said Rachel Danes.
"Yeah, I could see the similarities," confessed Roth. "The dresses, the way I dress, and I had a mentor."
Roth was curious whether the film's star, Ken Higelin, had any idea of the parallels--so he introduced himself and tried to explain to the French actor who he was.
"He doesn't really understand English that well," Roth said, "so I invited him up to my showroom tomorrow."
The movie was screened twice and a lot of the designers watched both showings. Steven Meisel, Bruce Weber, Beverly Peele and Tyra all showed up for the second screening, as well as Naomi Campbell, whom Miramax head Harvey Weinstein thanked "for all her help." "It's a sweet movie, a nice homage to the fashion industry," said Weinstein. "And then we have 'PrÉt É Porter.' I've seen it. The fashion industry is going to faint."
