ALFIN CREDITS COSMETICS SALES VIA TELEVISION FOR GAINS IN NET

NEW YORK--Citing strong sales of specialty packaged cosmetics through television shopping, first-quarter profits at Alfin Inc., climbed to $50,201 from $11,133 a year ago. Cost-reduction programs contributed to a 13 percent decrease in selling, general and administrative expenses in the latest quarter.
In the quarter ended Oct. 31, sales fell 11 percent to $7.3 million from $8.2 million, after a 75.2 percent drop in fragrance sales. Alfin said the decline in fragrance sales reflected closeouts during the year-ago quarter.
Sales of cosmetics through its Adrien Arpel Inc. subsidiary gained 11 percent to $6.7 million from $6.1 million.
The company noted that its program of marketing through home-shopping television began in April 1994.
