Some designers won't be showing at all during the scheduled show week. These include Isabel Toledo, Stephen Di Geronimo and Maria Snyder, all of whom were at Bryant Park last spring.
Toledo has abandoned the Celeste Bartos Forum to have a week-long exhibition at the Pucci International showroom at 44 West 18th St.
Toledo's husband, Ruben Toledo, is the designer for Pucci's mannequins.
"We showed holiday in there, and we got a lot of attention. It's a beautiful space, very light and airy," said Greg Mills, director of the company. "Ruben has designed two new mannequins, which will be introduced at the presentation. "Of course, budget has something to play in our decision; it is so expensive to show in Bryant Park, but Isabel's design strength is in her seams and cuts, which you're not really able to appreciate on the runway."
The collection will be presented on Pucci mannequins from Nov. 2 to Nov. 10.
"My heart is broken that I could not do a show at the tents. I wish there was some alternative and the tents had not become so elitist," said Di Geronimo.
"I wish there was a way to include young designers. I feel squeezed out. There's a fear that if you don't show at the park, no one will show up, and if you do, you go broke, so I'm showing a week after show week."
Di Geronimo will show his collection at a cocktail presentation.
"We will have informal modeling and it can be a little more relaxed. People have time to come uptown and hang out for awhile."
Di Geronimo was pleased with his show last year "because it brought us new accounts and we got more publicity than we ever had before."
Snyder said she is working on several important deals for her company, as well as planning a Paris presentation in January . She describes her concept as a collection of handpainted and handfinished pieces, but not at couture prices, which should appeal to her young clientele.
"I couldn't do both a New York show and a Paris presentation," said Snyder. "And the nouvelle couture collection is the more important concept that I want to emphasize."
