PARIS--Paco Rabanne Parfums carefully chose Nov. 8 for its XS Pour Elle launch date in France, but apparently overlooked a 66-foot, 28,500-light-bulb obstacle to its marketing plans: the Galeries Lafayette Christmas tree. The sapin de Noel is scheduled to go up the same week that Rabanne's new women's scent hits the shelves. When Rabanne launched the men's XS in spring 1993, it constructed a giant podium in the center of the cosmetics floor, flanked by a canvas, where shoppers were invited to paint graffiti. "We wanted to do something really original again," said Mariano Puig. However, Galeries Lafayette executives insist they will not delay the installation of the tree, and Rabanne is concerned that its promotion will have to peep out from between the boughs.
