BODY SHOP UP 23% IN PROFITS

NEW YORK--Body Shop International reported that pretax profits rose 23 percent to $19.4 million (12.3 million pounds) at current exchange rates for the half ended Aug. 31, from 10 million pounds a year ago.
The London-based company noted that pretax profits were in line with market expectations.
Sales rose 18 percent to $328.8 million (208.1 million pounds) from 175.8 million pounds. Sales in the U.K. rose 7 percent to $95.9 million (60.7 million pounds) and same-store sales gained 5 percent. In the U.S., total retail sales jumped 31 percent, but same-store sales fell 1 percent.
