MERRILL LYNCH TO SELL OFF MORE ANN TAYLOR STOCK

NEW YORK--Merrill Lynch Capital Partners plans to sell another 840,000 shares in Ann Taylor Stores Corp., trimming its stake to 28.9 percent from 32.5 percent.
Merrill's first sale of Ann Taylor stock was in May 1994, when it sold 4.08 million shares. The firm raised $123.9 million in the May sale and should get $30 million at current prices from the new offer. Merrill paid $90 million in cash to buy Ann Taylor from Allied Stores in 1989.
Buoyed by strong earnings and sales, shares of Ann Taylor reached a high of 44 7/8 in November 1994 from 25 at the start of the year. Ann Taylor closed Wednesday at 38 3/8, up 5/8 on the New York Stock Exchange.
