FASHION SCOOP

GOOD SPORT: Ralph’s really getting into the active thing. Polo Sport, Ralph Lauren’s functional sportswear, weekend wear and accessories store that opened on Madison and 72nd Street in September 1993, is said to be ready for some cloning. Sources said Lauren is eyeing SoHo and other sites for a big rollout next year, with possibly a few-dozen stores on the drawing boards.
“We have looked at SoHo over the past few years, but there is nothing concrete,” said Cheryl Sterling, president of Polo/Ralph Lauren retail and licensing. “We are always looking at ways of growing our business.”

IT AIN’T SO: Saks Fifth Avenue chairman Philip Miller denied rumors, fueled by a recent Chicago Tribune report, that he’s eyeing a return to Marshall Field’s, where he was chairman and chief executive officer from 1983 to 1990. Miller labeled Seventh Avenue rumors that he wants to lead an LBO buyout of Field’s “absurd and erroneous.” And he called the Trib’s speculative article “irresponsible journalism.”
The Trib tale was spun off a WWD story about a slip of the tongue by Miller at a Saks party for Yves Saint Laurent. The Saks boss mistakenly introduced himself to the crowd as the chairman of Field’s. Saks officials explained the slip of the tongue by saying Miller was suffering from jet lag after a trip to the Far East.

UNDER THE WIRE: Label by Laura Whitcomb will be on display during show week after all. The designer had booked time in the Bryant Park tents, then moved her location to Studio 54 and then canceled altogether. Now the show will be at the newly reopened Studio 54 on Friday, Nov. 4 at 8 p.m. — after Donna Karan’s show. A spokesman for the designer said that Whitcomb’s samples had come through in time.
Other late news comes from Tracy Feith, who might be taking runway cheesecake a step beyond: He’ll show at the Show World porn palace at West 42nd Street and Eighth Avenue, on Nov. 3 at 5:30 p.m.
