In the Twenties, it apparently did. “Salary Increases for Sales Force Depend on Regular Reading of Style Features in Women’s Wear Daily,” announced a headline on August 20, 1927. The store in question was millinery boutique Dann in Washington, D.C. “In urging our people to keep thoroughly abreast of the style news of Women’s Wear Daily,” said manager Mr. Monaghan, “we are also appealing to their own self-interest, since a thorough knowledge of fashion enables them to accomplish sales in the best and most efficient manner.”
