Shopping is a major sport during the festive season, and Banana Republic embraced the notion at its holiday presentation Thursday. The lineup was displayed in a series of mini-shops, called, for example, The Shimmer Shop, The Print Shop and The Black and White Shop, each with clothes to match the theme.
For Shimmer, there were metallic blazers and sequined shift dresses, while Print came in an ocelot pattern for jackets and pants, with animal details on bags and shoes. “It’s anything but basics this season,” said Simon Kneen, Banana Republic’s creative director and executive vice president of design. “It’s a little bit of self-indulgence and faux fur, and definitely some sparkle. And if you’re not into sparkle, then go with the color.” Kneen was referring to ultrabright hues, some color-blocked for knit tops and skirts in The Candy Shop.
The men’s wear was more sedate, relying heavily on black and white with touches of gray. There were a variety of Fair Isle sweaters featuring traditional motifs, plaid blazers, herringbone pants and graphic scarves. Providing a “touch of toughness,” according to Kneen, were the splashes of camouflage prints in everything from ties to slim-cut pants.
