NEW YORK — Linda Beauchamp has resigned as president of Susan Dell Inc. after three years to focus on her own consulting company, Vision in Commerce, which will take Susan Dell on as its first client.

Beauchamp, a former president of men’s wear at Donna Karan and DKNY, joined Susan Dell to help turn the Texas designer’s fledgling ready-to-wear business into a nationally known fashion line, notable for more than Dell’s marital connection to one of the richest men in America, Dell Computer founder Michael Dell. But as Dell’s business has quickly developed with sales of close to $2 million — generated entirely through trunk shows, a Web site and Dell’s own store in Austin, Tex., — Beauchamp said she felt it was an appropriate time to explore other areas of her interest.

The company will be looking for a replacement, she said.

"I think there are other things in life right now that could be very rewarding," Beauchamp said. "Taking myself out of the day-to-day operations will give me a broader point of view in terms of being able to focus on areas that are a little more lifestyle driven."

Beauchamp’s company, based in New York, will target brand consulting for companies in categories such as wellness, home, food and wine, looking at what Beauchamp described as "what is going to be the next step for the new generation."

"I might be able to tap into some of the instincts I have and work on a broader base," Beauchamp said. "But Susan is still my top priority right now and I have a noncompete clause with anybody else in the fashion business."

Dell said the arrangement will allow her to continue to work with Beauchamp, while allowing her to develop new opportunities for herself. Dell has been designing for more than a decade, but expanded her scope with a full collection in 1999, when she opened her store in Austin.

Beauchamp had also consulted for other companies between the time she left Donna Karan in 1998, after seven years of building the company’s men’s business, and before that worked in retail at Saks Fifth Avenue and Macy’s.
