LOS ANGELES — Confirming months of speculation, Greg Scott has joined Bebe Stores Inc. as chief executive officer. He reports to Manny Mashouf, founder and chairman of the Brisbane, Calif.-based contemporary chain.

Scott resigned his position as president of Wet Seal’s Arden B. division on Jan. 7. He had been widely credited with making the contemporary division one of the better performers of the struggling juniors company.

Scott worked for Bebe once before, as vice president of merchandising from 1996 to 2000. He has also held positions as president of Laundry by Shelli Segal, senior merchandiser for Ann Taylor and a merchandiser for Henri Bendel. He began his retail career with Macy’s West.

Bebe, which operates 187 Bebe stores and 15 Bebe Sport units, has tallied improved earnings for the three months ended Dec. 31 to $13.9 million from $10.8 million a year ago. Sales rose 11.1 percent to $112 million from $100.8 million, and increased 7.1 percent on a comparable-store basis.

But Wall Street has looked for better earnings improvement, given the comp improvement. “Stores have looked good but not great,” said Joe Teklits, an analyst at Wachovia Securities. “Arden B. has looked better over the past six months and of course that was Scott. He’s a screaming talent, no doubt about it.”
