NEW YORK — Gregory Gemette has joined Bebe Stores Inc. in the new post of senior vice president and chief merchandising officer.

Gemette’s appointment was one of a series of personnel moves that swept over specialty retailing late Wednesday. Others included the appointment of John Kyees, previously Bebe’s chief financial officer, as cfo of Urban Outfitters and the resignation of David Frankel as president of Urban’s Free People wholesale division.

Gemette, most recently vice president and general merchandise manager of women’s at American Eagle Outfitters, reports to Manny Mashouf, Bebe’s chairman and chief executive. Tom Curtis, who had been serving as gmm of the Bebe stores on an interim basis, has been named general merchandise manager of the Bebe Sport division, reporting to Mashouf.

At Urban Outfitters, Kyees succeeds Stephen Feldman, whose departure from the firm, as reported, was announced in August when the company disclosed its second-quarter earnings results.

UO said Frankel’s exit was made “in order to pursue other business opportunities” and that Glen Senk, executive vice president of the firm, would assume his managerial responsibilities until a successor is named.

Free People’s line of young contemporary women’s apparel is sold to approximately 1,100 retailers and is also carried in a single Free People store. Additionally, UO operates 56 Urban Outfitters stores and 45 Anthropologie units in addition to a Web site and catalogue for each of those nameplates.

Bebe operates 172 Bebe stores and 12 Bebe Sport stores.
